On This Day in Nintendo History: Mario Bros.; Fire Emblem Gaiden; Mario’s Picross; Doshin the Giant; Mario Kart Arcade GP 2

On this day (March 14) in the history of Nintendo…

  • Mario Bros. was released for the multi-screen Game & Watch in Japan in 1983. In this action game developed by Nintendo R&D1, Mario and Luigi work in a bottling plant. Move them independently between the three conveyor levels to pick up the crates of bottles and move them to the top conveyor. When the boxes reach the top left edge, they are loaded onto the truck. You get 1 point for every crate your brother catches, and 10 points for every truckload of 8 crates.
  • Fire Emblem Gaiden was released in 1992 for the home computer in Japan. In this tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems, legends tell that a thousand years ago a great battle took place between the goddess Mira and the demon House God on the continent of Valencia. After the battle, the continent was divided between Sophia in the south and Rigel in the north. But now, Emperor Rudolph of Rigel has realized his plans to rule all of Valencia.
  • Picross Mario was released in Japan in 1995 for the Game Boy. Logic is required to decipher the mysterious images hidden in this puzzle game designed by Jupiter and Monkey! Help Mario solve the mystery of Picross. The secrets can be found in the numerical codes at the top left of each window. Decipher the numbers and find the hidden image in each puzzle. It takes quick thinking and a fast pace to solve the clues before time runs out.
  • Doshin the Giant was released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube in Japan. In this game of the gods, developed by Param in collaboration with Nintendo, Nintendo’s newest, biggest and yellowest star begins her career by emerging from the sea and entering a group of sparsely populated tropical islands. The curious villagers name their new friend Doshin – after the sound his 368 huge feet make when he swings – and from then on it’s up to you to control the big man’s every move, helping (or hindering) the villagers by using his unique giant powers.
  • Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 was released in 2007 for arcade games in Japan. Developed by Namco, this racing game features maps with custom characters, similar to Mario Kart: Double Dash!!! and Mario Kart DS. It contains almost all the content of the original, but adds some new tracks, objects and drivers. As in its predecessors, Pac-Man characters appear as playable characters in this game. The game also introduces Mametchi as a playable character.

What are your best memories of these games? How do you think they’re holding up today? Hash in the comments.
