ASUS VivoBook 15 F515 Laptop Review (2021 15.6″ F515EA-DS54)

ASUS’ new all-in-one laptop, the VivoBook 15 F515, is a mid-range laptop that meets your everyday computing needs without breaking the bank. It offers acceptable performance for its price in a nicely designed case. However, the ASUS also has its drawbacks, especially in terms of portability and value for money.

ASUS VivoBook F515 : The everyday premium driver

First: The model I’m going to test today is called the ASUS VivoBook 15 F515EA-DS54. I chose this one because I think it offers the best combination of performance and price of all the available options.

In terms of design, I think ASUS has played it safe with the VivoBook F515. Of course the design is sober, without showy elements or disorderly lines. It is simple, discreet, but above all it gives an impression of quality when you look at it. But if you hold it in your hand, you can feel all the plastic in the casing. It doesn’t feel cheap, but certainly cheaper than it actually is, which is partly due to the way it’s designed to look like a high-end laptop.

Check availability and prices

Some may find it boring to watch, but I disagree. It’s a simple laptop. It is designed to do things, not to look extraordinary on the table. The slim frame around the screen offers fantastic fluidity and lets the Full HD display take centre stage.

ASUS VivoBook F515EA-DS54 : Solid performance, overwhelming memory

This particular model, the VivoBook F515EA-DS54, is powered by an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, a quad-core machine that is great for all your daily computing tasks. It has a cache size of 8 megabytes and a maximum frequency of 4.2 GHz. You don’t have to deal with problems in your daily life. Its limitations should only become apparent when, for example, it is used in a more professional environment. B. during rendering and compilation. This is not the task for which the VivoBook was designed.

The system memory is designed for 8 gigabytes of DDR4 memory, which can be expanded to 16 gigabytes by installing a compatible 8 gigabyte memory card after consultation with the manufacturer. Still, 8 gigabytes should be enough for most users who won’t use this laptop much.

ASUS VivoBook F515EA-DS54 features a 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. It’s a pretty average SSD, but it doesn’t have the storage I was hoping for. By comparison : The Acer Aspire 5 A515-56-50RS comes with a larger and faster 512GB SSD for the same price.

Entry-level graphic and unimpressive screen

Since ASUS VivoBook is equipped with the new Iris Xe graphics card, you can play indie games and popular MMOs. Don’t expect spectacular details or shots. Also, forget about title requirements. If you’re a gamer, you should check out the new ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop powered by AMD.

The VivoBook’s screen is rather unattractive, but it’s on par with what other competitors offer. The 15.6-inch matte FHD IPS screen is not impressive. I think it should work for home users who aren’t that picky. However, if your daily routine includes creating digital art, editing lightweight photos, or streaming video content, this monitor won’t do the trick. In addition, the low brightness of 250nits will prove difficult when working outdoors or in brightly lit rooms.

ASUS VivoBook F515 : Interface and network

VivoBook 15 F515 is well equipped to meet the peripheral and connectivity needs of most users. It is equipped with a large number of connections, as you would expect from a universal system. If you don’t mind the lack of a Thunderbolt port, you shouldn’t have any problems connecting peripherals. These are the available I/O ports:

  • USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type A port
  • 2 USB 2.0 Type-A ports
  • HDMI 1.4
  • Audio combo plug
  • Micro SD card reader

The connectivity is similar to the rest of the specifications of this model. ASUS offers Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.1 for wireless networking. Not exactly cutting edge technology, but very affordable.

The ASUS VivoBook F515 is not as portable asseems.

The 15-inch ASUS VivoBook F515 weighs about 3.97 pounds, making it one of the heaviest devices I’ve tested this year. Don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t expect much from a mid-range laptop when it comes to portability. ASUS will feel like home or office. If you want more portability, check out the Acer Aspire 5, which offers the same screen size for just $3.64.

The battery life is not impressive either. With its 37 Wh battery, it can work for up to 6 hours at a time. The Acer, which I mentioned above, lasts about two hours longer. Any way you look at it, that’s a 30% longer battery life for a device that costs the same amount.

Concluding remarks

Ultimately, the ASUS VivoBook 15 F515EA-DS54 is a slightly shorter laptop in my opinion. I really wanted to like it, but the fact that the Acer Aspire 5 has so much more to offer in terms of mobility, storage capacity, and display quality keeps me from really recommending this VivoBook as a solid choice if you need a versatile mid-range device.

Buy now on Amazon

It does its job pretty well, but if you plan on using it for more than it is, I think you’ll be disappointed. Buy it when you need a reliable laptop for all your daily computing tasks at home, for light office work (documents, spreadsheets, email), and as a media device that lets you stream content online. Otherwise, Acer seems to be the most reliable choice overall.
